1,400 Pound Great White Spotted Just Off Our Jersey Shore Coast,

I thought my weight was high post COVID but this great white has me beat. A more than 1,400-pound great white shark, my friend's name is Breton by the way, is swimming off the Jersey Shore coast right now. I just checked out where he was here and you can keep tabs on him too. In case you are not familiar, OCEARCH, is a nonprofit that has been working with scientists to tag and monitor sharks for more than ten years. This is a big boy.

Breton is 13 feet, 3 inches and 1,437 pounds. He is an adult male and he “pinged” just 11.8 miles from Bay Head at about 7:36 a.m. Friday morning. What creates a “ping” alert? Whenever a shark's dorsal fin surfaces long enough to be detected by a satellite a ping will occur.

Breton had made quite the journey, he was tagged back in September of 2020 in Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia. You would think that kind of cardio would burn some calories right?

Breton began his most recent journey north in June and has been traveling north off the coast of New Jersey since at least July 7. I think he likes it here. He “pinged” five times off of Cape May and then three more times earlier Wednesday night miles from Lavallette and Toms River. He's got good taste in vacation spots.

These guys don't mess around, Breton swam over 8,240 miles in 184 days. Whew.

If you remember, an even bigger shark — Mary Lee — became a social media phenomenon in 2016 and 2017, she was a Jersey Shore lover who hung around for quite a bit. She is a 3,400-pound shark, and in my mind that qualifies as a megalodon. She has not pinged since June of 2017 maybe she is tired of the paparazzi?
