Every day on my way to our studios I pass this historical site. I saw the sign and thought this may be an interesting story, but as days and years have gone by I never took it upon myself to visit, grab some photos and then investigate.

It is the Friends Meeting located on Route 9 in Tuckerton. This place of worship, founded by Quakers, was established originally circa 1702, making it 320 years old. According to some of the records this location had buildings dating back to the early 1700s, the current building was built circa 1863, right around the time of the Civil War.

Many of those buried at the Quaker cemetery date back to the 1800s, with some born in the 1700s. True history right here in Ocean County and many of us drive right by without even realizing it. The current structure is 159 years old.

The meetinghouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. "The current meeting house is the second on this site, replacing the antiquated structure that was erected ca. 1709 as the first meeting house of the Little Egg Harbor Friends. The original meeting house bore little resemblance to the current one." ~ Library of Congress
