NJ Transit worker’s ‘NO CASH’ sign was a scam, officials say

NEW BRUNSWICK — An NJ Transit station worker has been charged with pocketing countless fares by selling forged tickets.

Authorities say John A. Davey, 49, of East Brunswick, placed a “NO CASH” sign on the vending machines at the New Brunswick station, forcing cash-paying customers to purchase tickets at the counter where he worked.

There, Davey would sell customers tickets he had forged using official NJ Transit ticket paper stock and a thermal printer, which NJ Transit police say they confiscated from his home.

When Davey was arrested, police said he had 101 forged tickets and $1,285.95 in cash.

Davey has been charged with official misconduct, theft and forgery, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday.

Davey has been a ticket agent for 29 years. He earned $52,457 in 2015, according to DataUniverse.

New Jersey 101.5 could not locate a phone number for Davey on Monday and it wasn't known whether he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
