A recent study determined that New Jersey is a generous state, but it's not among the most generous states in the nation.

The results of this study, published at Wallet Hub lists the Garden State as the 18th most generous state in America. The good news is we made the top 20. The bad news, we barely made the top 20.

My initial reaction to that was straight up shock because over the years, I have seen New Jersey residents come through time and time again , and without hesitation, to help neighbors in need.

My experience with those who live in New Jersey is that we know no bounds when it comes to generosity, and it always warms my heart to see it. So how did we wind up at #18? Let's look at some of the details.

Several categories were considered when ranking the states, including things like 'volunteering and charitable service', which we ranked 25th and 'charitable giving'. (We were 22nd in that one.

Other things that were considered were 'percentage of income donated', 'most charities per capita' and 'highest volunteer rate'. New Jersey did not rank in the top 5 (or bottom 5 for that matter) in any of those categories.

I will tell you, I'm having a little bit of a hard time with this one. Based on my experience over the years at the Jersey Shore, I have found our residents to be among the most caring, generous people around. Maybe we'll do better in the rankings next year, but either way, keep up the good work New Jersey!

For the record, Minnesota is America's
