It's a sad day in Monmouth County with the news Sheriff's Office K-9 Nanook, the partner of Officer Anthony Muscarella, has passed away.

Nanook, an 8-year old German shepherd who specialized in explosive detection and patrol, died from gastrointestinal complications on Wednesday.

Veterinary specialists and Officer Muscarella made the tough decision so Nanook would no longer have to suffer from so much pain and discomfort.

The team of Nanook and Muscarella responded to multiple school bomb threats and unattended packages to rule out dangerous material as well as working at major transportation hubs, large buildings, universities and stadiums.

One of them was in 2014 when the Denver Broncos played the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium during SuperBowl 48.

Nanook injured his leg during that assignment but was back on the job in a month.

He graduated from the New Jersey State Police Canine Academy in 2011.

"The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office is extremely saddened on the passing of this exceptional and loyal member of our K-9 unit," Sheriff Shaun Golden said. "Nanook played a pivotal role in helping to protect our county against criminal and terroristic threats and assist in the apprehension of suspects. We are grateful for his service. He will be missed."

"Nanook is gone, but will never be forgotten for his dedication in assisting to maintain public safety throughout Monmouth County. RIP always," The MCSO said on Facebook.
