Mays Landing man charged for punch that’s now killed a township resident
A good Samaritan from Mays Landing who tried breaking up a domestic assault November 2 and got punched for his efforts has passed away.
Atlantic County Prosecutors say 54-year old John Charlton got out of his car on Route 40 near Cantillion Boulevard and ordered 24-year old Calvin Wiggins to stop assaulting a woman.
Charlton then allegedly decked him. He fell to the ground, hit his head and never woke up.
He had been taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center after the attack but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday November 12.
Initially charged with aggravated assault Wiggins is now charged with aggravated manslaughter.
The investigation had been handled by Hamilton Township Police Detective Craig Clayton.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy represents the state in the matter.
These charges are merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, a charged defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
