NEWARK — A Florida man was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting that he stole credit card data held by New Jersey residents, causing credit companies to lose $23 million.

Miguel Gonzalez, 43, of Miami, was sentenced Tuesday to 73 months in federal prison, five years of supervised release, a $100,000 and forfeiture of a house, boat, car and $30,000 in jewelry.

Federal prosecutors say Gonzalez stole information on more than 114,000 credit card accounts from January 2010 to July 2013 by buying it from vendors who obtained the stolen data from hackers who targeted retailers in New Jersey.

The data was then used by Gonzalez and others to create fake credit cards and purchase goods, officials said.
