LAKEWOOD — The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the FBI conducted a raid on four locations in Lakewood, resulting in the arrest of at least eight people — including a rabbi.

The FBI's Newark office confirmed to New Jersey 101.5 that Rabbi Zalmen Sorotzkin of the synagogue Congregation Lutzk was arrested at his home early Monday along with his wife, Tzipporah Sorotzkin, on fraud charges involving public assistance funds.

Also arrested were Sorotzkin's brother, Mordechai Sorotzki,n and his wife Rachel at their home on Albert Avenue. Shimi and Yocheved Nussbaum were arrested at their home on Hadassah Lane along with Mordechai and Jocheved Breskin at their home on Blue Jay Way.

 

The indictments remained sealed on Monday morning. The defendants would be making an appearance in U.S. District Court in Trenton on Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

The Asbury Park Press, which was first to report the raids, said those arrested are accused of fraud involving as much as $1.3 million.

Lakewood Police confirmed that the prosecutor's office conducted an operation in on Monday but would not disclose any other information.
