An 18-year-old Atlantic City man has been arrested and charged following an altercation Monday.

Police officers in the World's Play Ground say they responded to the 800 block of Pacific Avenue for a report of an armed man being involved in an altercation with a woman.

At the scene, they learned that the man, 18-year-old Abdul Chappell of Atlantic City, was involved in an argument with the victim, whom he knew when he allegedly suggested that he had a gun and stole her cell phone.

Officers responded to Chappell's home in the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue and arrested him after he was leaving the residence.

Authorities say he gave false information to the officers and attempted to pull away while being arrested; he was in possession of the stolen cell phone.

Officer John Bell was granted a court authorized search warrant for the residence in an effort to locate a gun. During the search, officers located an airsoft gun that was modified to be identical to a real handgun including the use of an extended magazine. Additionally, a rifle was also located.

Chappell has been charged with the following:

  • Robbery
  • Possession of an imitation firearm
  • Possession of a large-capacity magazine
  • Hindering apprehension
  • Resisting arrest
  • Unlawful possession of a weapon

He was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
