Atlantic County Republican Party Chairman Don Purdy has promptly called for Northfield, New Jersey Mayor Erland Chau to resign from office.

Chau is a fellow Republican, yet this did not stop Purdy from calling for his resignation, immediately following the Linwood Police Department releasing word of the following criminal charges filed against Chau:

Erland N. Chau, 72, of Northfield, was charged with Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Disorderly Conduct, and Harassment, in consultation with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, following an investigation of an incident that occurred in the parking lot of Mainland Regional High School on October 1, 2024.

Chau was released by the Linwood Police Department on a summons pending his upcoming court date, still to be announced.

Purdy released the following:

This is direct response to reports of an incident involving Northfield Mayor Erland Chau and threats with a firearm. This sort of behavior is completely unacceptable. Threats are never ok, let alone with a weapon. Erland Chau needs to resign as mayor immediately; he is unfit for public office," said Purdy.

Chau has been arrested and charged with:

  • possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
  • disorderly conduct.
  • harassment.

This all involves an alleged altercation with a woman outside of Mainland Regional High school on October 1, 2024.

On October 30, 2023, we conducted an elaborate on-air interview with Chau on WPG Talk Radio 95.5, following serious allegations made by Annette Alegret, who was formally Annette Carmen.

Alegret wrote me a detailed letter, which outlined (with significant specificity) 4 different issues that she alleges happened with Chau during her teaching career at Mainland Regional High School.

Alegret taught from 1998 through 2013.

Chau was is a retired teacher at Mainland Regional High School for 45 years.

Finally, for the first time since Chau’s criminal charges have been announced … we can provide some important context about the weapon involved.

We have confirmed from an impeccable law enforcement source that the weapon that Chau has been charged with brandishing is his starters pistol, that Chau uses as a long-time (New Jersey state certified) track and field official.

We’re not diminishing the charge of an alleged crime, using a weapon, however, we believe it’s important to note that the “gun” is not capable of shooting actual live rounds.

However, that’s not to say that starters pistol appearance does not pose a potential threatening  effect.

Before criminally charging Chau, the Linwood Police Department consulted with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
