I'm going to say it, this year's Super Bowl half-time show featuring Rihanna left me unmoved.  I thought it was boring.

Before you accuse me of being out of touch, let me start by stating up front that I like Rihanna.  She's incredibly talented and is a very successful performer.  Here's my complaint:  her performance didn't evoke any emotion. It was boring.

Good performers and good performances evoke emotion.  They make you happy, they make you laugh, they make you cry and sometimes they even make you angry.  This year's show evoked none of those.

The Super Bowl halftime show has evolved dramatically through the years.  It's hard to believe that the first Super Bowl halftime show featured a couple of college marching bands.  Super Bowl 12?  Something called, "From Paris to the Paris of America" starring Tyler Apache Belles, Pete Fountain and Al Hirt.

It wasn't until Super Bowl 27, that a popular mainstream artist took the stage.  It was none other than the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Since then, we've seen an incredible variety of performers representing different genres of music.  We've had a "Rockin' Country" show featuring country legends.  Then there was a "Salute to Motown's 40th" that featured The Temptations, Martha Reeves, Boyz II Men and others.

In Super Bowl 38, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake were remembered for "nipplegate." Paul McCartney gave a great performance in Super Bowl 39, and who will ever forget the scene of Prince performing Purple Rain in the pouring rain?  Bruno Mars gave a great performance in Super Bowl 48, and Jennifer Lopez and Shakira...well, you know...

To date, no performer has starred in a second halftime show performance.  I'm suggesting that next year, that should change.  Bring back the Boss for Super Bowl 58.

In Super Bowl 43, Bruce and the E Street Band did what they do best. They tore the house down with a short, powerful set list that had everyone on their feet and singing along that felt akin to a rock and roll religious experience.

The time has come to bring them back for an encore.  How refreshing would it be to watch a straight-up, legendary rocker?  It's been a while.  We need some Heart-stoppin', Fun Lovin', Hard Rockin', Booty Shakin' fun.  Bring back the E Street Band.
