Great Winter Hack for New Jersey Drivers
Weather in New Jersey is a mixed bag, isn't it?
It sure seems like weather patterns have changed over the years.
I remember growing up in Mercer County in the 70s.
You could usually depend on at least two or three significant snow events every winter.
We don't seem to get anywhere near the same amount of snow these days.
For me, I enjoy watching the snowfall.
It is pretty and calm, and I can sit at a window and watch for hours.
As much as I enjoy the snow, it's the aftermath of the snow I don't enjoy.
I'm not a cold-weather person.
Taking the dogs for their morning walk the next morning is an adventure that can be miserable.
However, the worst part of the day after a snowfall is, without a doubt, getting my car ready to go.
You know how you clear off the snow from your car, yet when you open the door, just enough snow gets on your seat to make your ride to work uncomfortable?
The other thing I hate is chipping the ice off your windows.
One thing you DON'T want to do is splash hot water water on your windows.
That can result in a cracked windshield.
Using a scraper is a pain.
This year, as the snow fell in Northfield, I did research and found a hack that can make clearing your windshield of ice, a little easier.
According to Good Housekeeping, getting the ice off your windshield can be quite easy.
They say you should fill a spray bottle with windshield wiper fluid (you can buy this at ShopRite or any home improvement store) and spray it on the windshield.
Gannon Burgett, an associate testing editor at Hearst Autos told the magazine,
Depending on the brand of windshield wiper fluid used, Burgett says the methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and glycols, or a combination of these ingredients in the formula, can help lower the freezing point of the ice, making it an excellent defrosting agent.
Once you spray the windshield, the ice should break up, making it easier to scrape off.
Something to keep in mind, it's a good idea to keep the bottle filled with fluid in your home (not in your car).
