A Look at Mainland Grad Chase Petty’s Big League Pitching Debut
2021 Mainland Regional High School graduate Chase Petty became the youngest Cincinnati Reds pitcher to appear in a game in almost 20 years on Wednesday night.
Petty, 22, was called up from Triple-A Louisville to pitch in the second game of Wednesday's day/night doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Let's just say that things didn't go exactly as planned.
Petty lasted 2 1/3 innings and was charged with nine runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Chase gave up two homers.
Chase Petty's Enthusiastic Start to the Game
Chase Petty made a memorable entrance to his first game at the Cincinnati Reds' Great American Ball Park, enthusiastically bouncing and jumping from the dugout to the mound to face the Cardinals for the first time.
"It was a great feeling," Petty said after the game. "Obviously, I wish the outcome was a little different. It's kind of hard to enjoy it. I'm happy to get it out of the way. Only up from here."
Reds manager, former Phillies skipper Terry Francona, said Petty had his adrenaline pumping to start the game.
"He looked like he was ready to run through the line when he came to the dugout before the game. He'll learn. There's a lot to like there; he'll learn."
Chase's Tough Start in the Majors
In a little over two innings, Chase Petty ran up a high pitch count, throwing 69 pitches in only 2 1/3 innings.
"You've got to execute pitches with two strikes", Petty said following the game.
"I know I am better than how I performed tonight. Guys are big leaguers, they're going to hit the mistakes".
Ranked as the Reds' number six prospect and the No. 99 overall prospect in the MLB pipeline, Chase Petty will have more chances to prove his worth.
For now, Chase will return to Louisville to work on his game and wait until the next callup.
