When is a 5K run more than just a race to win a medal, set a personal record or finish ahead of your friends?  When it benefits others and serves as a reminder of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.

The Sgt. John A. Lyons “Run to Remember”, a 5K and 1-mile fun run is set for Saturday, June 10 in Seaside Park.  The race perpetuates the memory of Sgt. Lyons, who grew up in the town, attended Central Regional High School and graduated from Rutgers.  An engineer in the Army, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom he was killed in October of 2011 in Afghanistan just a month before he was to return home.  Sgt. Lyons received numerous awards and honors including The Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  A dedicated runner the race was named in his honor and will begin and end at the 24th avenue basketball court that is named after him.  After that there will be a post-race get together at Bum Rogers Tavern.  Registration is online only at www.raceforum.com/ssr/

Proceeds from the race will go to Dine On Us, a 501©3 organization whose mission statement is to provide off base dining and entertainment opportunities for active military families dealing with economic hardships. There are thousands of them and their families who live in our area and while many do live on base the waiting list for base housing is more than a year.  Finding your own is a challenge as some enlisted members receive just an $1800 a month housing allowance even with children.

You might be surprised to hear that many of those who are serving us are living in poverty with a pay scale that qualifies them for government assisted programs like food stamps and WIC.  There is certainly not much left over for things many of us take for granted like a night out with the family for dinner or maybe a day on the boardwalk and beach. Dine On Us has partnered with numerous restaurants and more to let these families have some fun.

The Sgt. John A. Lyons Run to Remember keeps his memory alive and this year provides help to active duty military members and their families.
