However the one class that often brought out the best in me was English and the one teacher who generated much of that enthusiasm was Mr. Dunn.  He got me to understand that the subject was all about communication and it was something we would use every day for the rest of our lives, no matter what we did for a career. I would look forward to his class and became enamored with the written and spoken word which would later define me on the radio for more than four decades.

Often when you graduate that marks the end of your relationship with your teachers but not in this case.  Mr. Dunn’s teachings stayed with me and we stayed in touch on a fairly regular basis through Facebook as I followed him, his daughter Erin, son Jason and wife of 58 years, Mary.

By now you probably have picked up that this tribute comes just days after Cy Dunn passed away at the age of 84.  It was only a few weeks ago that we “spoke” through Facebook messenger when I saw a picture of him as part of Grandparents Day.  It seems shortly after that he suffered a stroke which I did not know about so the news of his death hit me like a ton of bricks.

Cy Dunn left a lasting legacy in not only his family but in students like me who were motivated by his teachings for decades.  I for one will not forget him.

For those who want to pay their final respects his viewing is today (Friday) from 1-3 and 5-7 at Layton’s Home For Funerals on Lacey Road in Forked River with a funeral service there Saturday morning at 9:30 AM.
