Pet Experts Warn: Avoid These Flowers on Mother’s Day

Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 12th, and for many, it may involve some type of flowers and/or plants for Mom. According to RetailMeNot, flowers, chocolate, and gift cards are the most popular Mother's Day gifts. So as you can see flowers and plants are at the top of the list. Flowers and plants are beautiful but some could be dangerous for your pets. Let's take a look at dangerous flowers to avoid this weekend.

House Digest has revealed a list of the most toxic Mother's Day flowers that your pet can get into, featuring insights from Dr. Kathryn Dench, MA, VetMB, and Chief Scientific Advisor at Paw Origins, and Dr. Kristi Crow. 

 

Flowers to avoid on Mother's Day (House Digest)

  • Daffodils Dr. Crow explained, "Daffodil bulbs contain alkaloids that can cause gastrointestinal upset, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, convulsions and cardiac arrhythmias."
  • Foxgloves Dr. Crow explains, "Foxglove contains cardiac glycosides, which can cause gastrointestinal upset, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, heart arrhythmias, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest in pets," Given the danger to both pets and children, it’s advisable to exclude them from arrangements.
  • Lillies Dr. Dench warns, "Lillies are famously toxic to cats, and also a risk to dogsIf a cat ingests ANY part of a lily, it can be extremely dangerous."
  • Tulips"The bulbs of tulips contain a compound called tulipalin A and B, which can cause a range of intense toxicity symptoms," Dr. Dench shared.

Other plants/flowers to avoid if you are a pet owner:

  • Oleander

  • Azaleas

  • Hydrangeas

  • Chrysanthemums

  • Rhododendrons

  • Amaryllis

 

What flowers/plants are good for Mom on Mother's Day?

Dr. Kristi Crow recommends "roses, orchids, sunflowers, snapdragons, zinnias, and marigolds, among others. You can also reach for options like African violets, Boston ferns, spider plants, bamboo palms, or even a Christmas cactus. Most succulents are safe, but the blue echeveria stands out as a particularly great choice."

 

Flowers, jewelry, chocolate, gift cards, etc. are all great gifts for Mom, just make sure you are careful in your selection if you have pets. Happy Mother's Day
