At least we weren't named number one.

New Jersey is always subject to annoying stereotypes, one of them being that we're the smelliest state.  Luckily, according to Zippia, that honor goes to Maryland (but we do come in at number seven).

Zippia is doing New Jersey dirty again (no pun intended) by ranking the grossest states in America.  Again, thankfully we didn't come out on top, but we did rank in the top 10.

The website had some interesting criteria for its list.  Zippia did take some typical gross things into account, like the CDC's ranking of the spread of illness, air quality, and trash rating.  I know those traits definitely had a bad influence on our score since NJ has a bunch of refineries and landfills.

But, here's where Zippia lost me on the gross ranking criteria.  Apparently, they took "cultural grossness" into consideration.  Two examples were the state's google searches about "croc wearing," and "mayo recipes."

I am confident that New Jersey didn't score high in either of those categories.

Also, I wouldn't call crocs gross, they fall under tacky to me.  I digress.

Virginia took the cake for the grossest state in America, and Zippia claims that they ranked really high when it came to wearing crocs and cooking with mayonnaise.

And, we can brag that our neighbors to the west are grosser than we are.  Pennsylvania came in at number four, thanks to its numerous landfills.

New Jersey ranks as the seventh grossest state, according to Zippia.  The website blamed our grossness on our trash problem (at least no crocs or mayo recipes were mentioned).

And, if you're wondering which state is the least gross, it's Alaska.  I'm guessing it's because no one ever goes there.
