If you scroll through Facebook and other social media platforms you are bound to come across stories that instantly remind you that no matter what is bringing you down there are others that have it so much worse.  Such was the case this week when my friend Chef Mike Jurusz shared a post regarding a GoFundMe for Mae Higham.  She is a 31 year old graduate of Toms River North and Stockton University who worked as a hostess for several years at Mike’s ABG restaurant in South Seaside Park and is also a close family friend.  Recently she has been living and working in Illinois but for now is staying with her parents in Chadwick Beach for a very good reason.

Mae just recently received a diagnosis of a very rare cancer.  Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) impacts about one in a million and adults between 30-40 are among the most likely to be diagnosed with this cancer of the adrenal gland.  An MRI revealed that her cancer was in stage 4 and has has already spread into her liver, heart and lungs.

Diagnosed at Northwestern University in Chicago she is now under the care of doctors at  Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York as they take an aggressive approach to dealing with this rare cancer..  Mae has an uphill fight and the next few months will likely require surgeries, treatments, hospital stays and staggering medical costs along with everyday expenses.

Her friends are asking others to join the fight and calling it “Help Our One In A Million Mae.”  A beautiful young lady described as kind-hearted, generous, creative and fun-loving she and her family are the latest to have cancer enter their lives.  If you would like to make a donation please simply hit donate below which will take you to the GoFundMe page.

We all know that cancer sucks.  At least we can do a small part to let Mae know we are on her team.
