Ouch! Are Greenheads Bad In Your Jersey Neighborhood?

So far this summer it seems that the greenhead flies are a bit more aggressive than last summer. Anytime I am out in the yard there's a good chance I will get a few that decide I might be the perfect victim to swoop down on.

What Are Greenheads?

If you've ever been near the marshes at the Jersey Shore in the middle of summer, chances are you've met the infamous greenhead fly. These little pests are known for their painful bite, and believe me, you'll know when one gets you. They love hot, sunny days and hang around marshes, bays, and other coastal areas.

The good news is they don't stick around all summer, but while they do, they're enough to send just about everyone running for cover. Around New Jersey, they're simply part of summer near the water.

Here in Southern Ocean County, they seem to love to hang out all summer, and if you get wet, you will be visited by these biters. They love wet skin, and they will find you.

Personally, when I am out in the yard gardening, washing the cars, and/or taking a walk in the neighborhood, I wear sweats or jogging pants. Yes, it's hot, but it beats the bites! Greenheads love legs and open legs that are wet, and sweating is a sure-fire draw for these BUGS. A hat is good to keep them off your head. Maybe a little bug repellent (Skin-So-Soft) on the arms, and you're set to be somewhat ok.

Why Are Greenheads Like Possums?

Greenheads like to play dead. You smack one, and you see it hit the ground, and you think "oh good, it's dead". Think again, once you turn away, they will fly up and bite you anyway. They play dead, and once you swat 'em, stomp on 'em, or it will be back to get you.
