Brick Green Dragons Put 4 More On The Wall
There is something special about being honored by your alma mater or place you spent your career at so you can be sure that the four newest inductees into Brick Township High School's Wall of Fame this week were humbled by the recognition. The school had not hosted an induction dinner since 2019 because of the pandemic and taking their spot on the “wall” were Denny Toddings, William Darnell, Dr. Stephen Genco and Jim Barber, a diverse group that has made huge contributions to the green and white over the years.
Denny Toddings was part of the 1960 state championship football team under legendary coach Warren Wolf and earned All-County, All-Shore and All-State honors. He would spend 36 years of his career in education as teacher, coach and administrator at St. Joseph’s/Monsignor Donovan (now Donovan Catholic) High School.
Bill Darnell, grew up in Lake Riviera and was an outstanding student-athlete who earned 7 varsity letters in track and cross country. Following his graduation from college he would return to his alma mater for more than three decades serving as a teacher, guidance counselor, guidance director at assistant principal while also coaching.
Steve Genco’s sport was wrestling and his took his talents to West Virginia University after graduating from Brick. His began his career in education as a teacher and coach before becoming an assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and later Superintendent of Schools in both South Plainfield and Jackson Township and an Interim Superintendent in Toms River. Currently he is employed at Georgian Court University.
Jim Barber or “JB” as he is known was the first Athletic Trainer to be hired at Brick Township in 1991. He would spend the next 30 years dedicating himself to athletes, coaches, parents and staff and his contributions were immeasurable. Jim was always there to take care of students and was the backbone of the coaching staff.
The Wall of Fame was established in 2004 to promote pride in the school and honor graduates or those affiliated with the school for their achievements and service.
