Where to Find the Best Empanadas in Ocean and Monmouth Counties
Every now and then, you stumble across a food that's so satisfying it instantly becomes something you crave. For me, that's an empanada.

Sure, my sister-in-law still makes my absolute favorite homemade empanadas (and I don't think anyone will ever top hers), but when I'm out exploring Ocean and Monmouth counties, there are some incredible local spots that come pretty close.
One of the things I love most is that some of the best empanadas aren't always found in traditional restaurants. They're tucked inside family-owned eateries, food trucks parked at festivals, and vendors at local farmers markets. That's part of the fun, you never know where you'll discover your next favorite.
Whether you love them stuffed with seasoned beef, chicken, cheese, vegetables, or something a little more adventurous, these local businesses know exactly how to make an unforgettable empanada.
What Exactly Is an Empanada?
An empanada is a handheld pastry filled with savory or sweet ingredients, folded over into a half-moon shape, sealed around the edges, and either baked or fried until perfectly golden.
The name comes from the Spanish word empanar, which means "to wrap in bread." While empanadas originated centuries ago, nearly every Latin American country has developed its own unique version. Some feature flaky pastry dough, while others use a heartier crust. Fillings can range from seasoned meats and cheeses to seafood, vegetables, fruit, or even dessert fillings.
They're portable, comforting, and packed with flavor in every bite. With a little help from yelp.com and 92.7 WOBM listeners, these are your favorites!

Every Empanada Has Its Own Personality
One of the best things about empanadas is that no two places make them exactly the same.
Some are loaded with perfectly seasoned beef and onions. Others are filled with shredded chicken, spicy pork, gooey cheese, buffalo chicken, or even breakfast ingredients. Some bakeries specialize in flaky baked empanadas, while others are known for crispy fried versions with an irresistible crunch.
Trying different styles is half the fun.
