Iconic Department Store Returns—Here’s Where It’s Reopening in New York
It’s wild to think about how fast department stores went from being the place to shop to ghost towns.
There was a time when spending a Saturday at the mall felt like a legit event.

You’d grab a pretzel, maybe try on ten outfits you couldn’t afford, and wander through three floors of stuff you didn’t need—but kind of wanted anyway. Now? Not so much.
The truth is, department stores didn’t just fall out of fashion.
Prices went up, customer service dropped off, and the excitement of walking through double doors into perfume-spritzed air faded.
At some point, people realized they could get the same stuff online in their pajamas without chasing down someone to find their size.
It also didn’t help that these stores didn’t exactly keep up.
While online retailers were getting faster, smarter, and more personal, department stores were still stuck trying to sell last season’s inventory like it was brand new.
And let’s be honest, nobody wants to dig through racks when they can scroll and click from their couch.
Even the big names couldn’t hang on. One by one, they started downsizing, closing locations, or disappearing completely.

Some tried to rebrand or shrink their stores, hoping that going smaller would somehow make them more modern. Sometimes it worked. Most times, it didn’t.
Now, when one makes a comeback or opens a new location, it feels almost, well, nostalgic.
Like spotting a payphone in the wild, you can’t help but smile, even if you’re not sure you’ll actually use it.
It seems what’s old really can be new again, at least for Nordstrom.

Don't get too excited. The beloved massive Nordstrom anchor stores aren't coming back anytime soon.
Instead, Nordstrom Rack locations are popping up. This may actually be better than an original Nordstrom.
At Rack locations, shoppers can find steals and deals that have never been seen at the original department store.
Nordstrom Rack has announced that two new locations are set to open in New York by this Fall.
