It's always a sad day when a beloved, local mom-and-pop business has to close its doors, but it's something we see happen from time to time in Jersey. And when the business that closes is a pizza shop, it hurts a little more for some reason.

New Jersey Loves Its Local Pizza Shops

Local pizza shops are the heart of New Jersey, the kind of place where you go when you're a kid, then when you're a teenager, and then eventually you're taking your kids to that same pizza shop that you went to growing up, and the owner always smiles and says "hi" while getting your slice ready.

When I was growing up, we had a place like that down the road in Pennsylvania called Tony's Pizza Palace. Well, Allenhurst, NJ, has a place like this, or at least it used to.

According to their website, Serpico's Pizzeria & Restaurant has announced that after 32 years, they are closing their doors for good. The announcement was also posted on their Facebook page and met with an outpouring of support for the local pizza shop.

Some folks mentioned that they'd been going to Serpico's for a Christmas dinner for as long as they can remember, and the holiday will never be the same; others just shared how much they'll miss their favorite local pizza spot.
