Sadly, that's been the reality that a lot of people are facing right now thanks to a strange mystery illness that's affecting dogs across the country.
A Mysterious Respiratory Illness Is Spreading Amongst Dogs In America
It's sad, but true.
According to USA Today the disease first showed up back in the summer of 2023 and has quickly spread across the country.
Symptoms of this respiratory disease are similar to that of Kennel Cough or Pneumonia, including difficulty breathing, weight loss, dehydration, fever, and wheezing.
What's really scary is that this disease seems to not respond to the normal course of treatment for either Kennel Cough or Pneumonia and has resulted in several fatalities.
The Mystery Dog Illness Is Slowly Making Its Way To New Jersey.
USA Today reports the disease first surfaced in California but has since spread to 14 states including Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
The Disease has also surfaced in Maryland, which is just a short hop skip from New Jersey.
If you remember how quickly COVID-19 hopped from state to state it's not impossible to think this mysterious dog illness will quickly be inside the Garden State.
How To Protect Your Dog Against Catching This Mystery Disease.
Fortunately, there are ways to try and keep your pup safe and sound while veterinarians try to figure out what exactly is causing this sickness.
USA Today reports you should make sure your dog is fully up to date on their vaccines, and as tough as it may be you'll want to avoid dog parks, pet stores, and groomers for the time being.
Diseases like this are also known to spread quickly in kennels and other boarding facilities, so for the time being, maybe don't leave your dog with a facility unless it's absolutely necessary.
