This Unique New Jersey Holiday Trend Is Cool But May Actually Be Illegal

I’ve seen this a couple of times driving around Ocean and Monmouth Counties, and to be honest, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it on the roadways, and I'm not sure if it's legal.

Is this a thing in New Jersey, or am I just not that observant?

During the holiday season, it’s always fun to decorate.

Whether that’s your tree, your home, or your yard.

Showing people that you’re in the spirit of the holidays is always fun!

I’ve even seen people go as far as to decorate their vehicle with a wreath, reindeer antlers, or some Christmas decals on the back window.

That being said, I’ve noticed one trend, if you can call it that, over the past few weeks and I’m genuinely curious if it’s just a New Jersey thing or not.

While out on the road, specifically after the sun has set I've noticed vehicles with lights on.

And not just headlights either I mean cars fully decked out in Christmas lights on the roadways!

I saw a pickup truck that had white LED lights lining the truck bed, a Jeep Wrangler that had its spare tire wrapped in colorful lights, and a station wagon that had a wreath tethered to the truck covered in white lights.

Honestly, it was cool to see!

But, Is It Legal To Have Christmas Lights On Your Car In New Jersey?

According to a quick search, it appears the general agreement is that it's technically not illegal, but it's also not highly recommended either.

Having extra lights on your car could possibly impede other drivers' abilities to safely navigate the roadways.

That being said, New Jersey does have rules when it comes to certain lights on your car.

Oznion advises that you can have under-glow lights on your vehicle but there are a few rules.

White and Amer can only be displayed on the front and sides of your car, white has to go above your license plate, lights can't flash, and blue lights are reserved strictly for emergency vehicles.

Now under-glow lights are of course different than Christmas lights so your best bet is to just ask your local law enforcement to be wholly sure.
