A tropical storm and hurricane both start off as cyclones that form due to warm water. When a cyclone hits windspeeds between 39 and 74 MPH, it's then labeled as a tropical storm.
Anything over 74 MPH is considered a hurricane.
Could Hurricane Gabrielle Reach the Jersey Shore?
So, will Gabrielle end up causing problems next week? According to APP, it's still too early to tell. The system is likely to move Northwest, which would put it near the Jersey Shore next week, but a lot can happen between now and then.
