Sea Isle City, NJ condo balcony collapses onto floor below

SEA ISLE CITY — A balcony collapsed on a nine-story building Friday afternoon.
Photos show the collapse of a balcony from the eighth floor into the seventh floor of the south building of the Spinnaker condominium complex on the boardwalk.
Mayor Leonard Desiderio said the collapse happened around 2 p.m.
A fire official said that one person was trapped on the seventh-floor balcony and two people on the 8th floor were injured by the collapse. He described the response as recovery operation late Friday afternoon.
A city resident told NBC Philadelphia that she heard the balcony crash followed by a "blood-curdling scream."
Sea Isle City police identified the man pinned under a 30-foot concrete slab as Jose Pereira, 43, of Philadelphia. His body was recovered Friday night.
Out of town help
Capt. Matt Johnson of the Cape May County Urban Search & Rescue Team told NBC Philadephia that each of the condo floors weighs an estimated 11,000 pounds.
Fire departments in Camden and Cherry Hill sent urban search and rescue crews to assist.
The Commodore Club Sea Isle City inside the condo was closed because of the collapse.
According to its website, the Spinnaker complex dates back to the 1970s. Construction on the south tower began in 1972 with the north tower following.
