The 10 best elementary schools in New Jersey are all located in the northern half of the state, according to updated rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News looked at thousands of schools in New Jersey that handle multiple grades in the range of pre-K to 8th.

The list focuses solely on academics; factors such as staff, facilities, and location aren't part of the equation.

Specifically, U.S. News based its ranking on the share of students were proficient in math and the share of students who were proficient in reading/language arts.

Half of the list's formula uses the scores themselves, and the other half incorporates those results in the context of the demographics of the students being served. Student-teacher ratios are considered to "break ties."
