Keansburg vs. Asbury Park High School Football Game Canceled Due to Public Safety Threat
Friday night's Shore Conference Patriot Division game between Keansburg High School and Asbury Park High School has been canceled due to anonymous threats of violence, officials at both schools announced on Friday afternoon.
The game was initially scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Asbury Park's William "Butch" Bruno Field but was canceled when Keansburg school officials received threats of violence to occur at the game. The nature of the threats was not specified. Keansburg then alerted Asbury Park of the threats and the game was canceled for tonight.
News 12's Jim Murdoch was the first to report the game's cancelation. News 12's report states that Keansburg officials notified Asbury Park that the Titans would be forfeiting the game, but a Twitter post from the Keansburg Office of the Superintendent stated that the Keansburg is requesting the game rescheduled for a future date.
Asbury Park School District Communications Coordinator Chanta L. Jackson said the game was canceled "out of an abundance of caution for students, athletes, families, spectators, and the community at large".
Asbury Park has a 2-2 record while the Titans are looking for their first victory. This is the second time Asbury Park has had a game canceled or postponed this season. The Blue Bishops had to forfeit their season-opening game vs. Weequahic due to not having enough eligible players, but debuted the following week and have since won two games.
