The teams of the Class B Central can all let out a collective sigh of relief now that Ranney is out of the division and the group now consists of teams that figure to all be fairly competitive with one another. Ranney was one of the best teams in the state playing against Group I schools and Mater Dei Prep – a recipe for disaster that led to a 46-0 win by the division champions over Asbury Park and 11 other lopsided wins for the Panthers.

Even without Ranney, the division still has a champion in its midst, with Point Beach set to defend the Central Jersey Group I title for the first time ever. The Garnet Gulls have brought some additional respect to the division over the years by playing competitive baseball outside the division and making prolonged postseason runs in most seasons.

While the above-the-fold headlines in B Central are the departure of Ranney and title defense of Point Beach, the two new members are also newsworthy. St. Rose is back in the division after decades of dominance up until its move from B Central to A Central from 2019 until last season, while Long Branch gets out of a ridiculously-loaded A North division after taking a beating over the past three seasons.

The current mix of teams is not likely to produce a team that goes all that deep in the county or conference tournaments, but it is a group that should combine to produce a spirited division title race that should get multiple teams involved. When the race is over, there is still a team in the ranks that has a title to defend and should have the pieces to give it a good run.

In predicted order of finish

Point Pleasant Beach

Every year, the road to the NJSIAA Group I championship goes through perennial state championship favorite Middlesex and for Point Beach, that was annually where its planned rout to a first ever Central Jersey Group I championship ended. That is, until last year. Point Beach made the trip to Middlesex for the fifth straight year – the third straight in the sectional final – and finally topped the Blue Jays to win the program’s first ever sectional championship.

With one championship trophy finally on display at Point Pleasant Beach High School, the Garnet Gulls have their collective eyes fixed on more championships in 2023. With three key pitchers back in the rotation and four of the team’s regular hitters also back in the fold, Point Beach expects to first take advantage of Ranney leaving the division and make a run at another Class B Central championship, then turn its attention back to the state tournament.

It starts on the mound for the Garnet Gulls, with senior right-handers Kyle Kolans and James Larsen returning off strong performances at the top of the Point Beach rotation. Both pitched against some of the better competition on the schedule and Kolans was lights-out during the stretch run in ultimately finishing the season with a sub-1.00 ERA – including recording the final three outs of the championship win over Middlesex. Junior Jackson Killian is the other returning starter, giving the Garnet Gulls an experienced base for its pitching staff.

On offense, Point Beach will boast an experienced infield, led by a middle infield duo that each hit .400 a year ago. Junior Bryan Matuschat shifts from third base to shortstop after posting a .433 average as a sophomore, while returning second baseman Colin Reinhart is riding high after hitting an even .400 and coming through with the go-ahead two-run double in the win at Middlesex. Junior catcher Nate Clayton also had an impressive sophomore season, while Larsen and Kolans move to the corner infield spots after getting regular at-bats at multiple positions in 2022.

The rest of the lineup will be relatively new, although junior John Coakley should provide some pop from the designated hitter spot after mashing seven hits – including a double and a homer – and walking three times in only 13 plate appearances as a sophomore. Freshman Tim Conroy and sophomore Dan Stroch are underclassmen ready to make an impact, while senior Nick Vitale and Manasquan transfer Quinn Cali are older newcomers on the brink of regular playing time.

While Ranney moves out of the division, Point Beach will face two battle-tested division newcomers in St. Rose and Long Branch, which should make for quality competition even with the defending division champions playing elsewhere. It won’t be a cakewalk, but Point Beach still comes into the season as the division favorite, now armed with the confidence and swagger of a sectional champion.

St. Rose

The season in which St. Rose played as a member of Class B Central, the Purples Roses went 20-7, reached the Monmouth County Tournament championship game and made it to the South Jersey Non-Public B championship game. In the three seasons since, St. Rose has won a combined total of 14 games – the result of a move to a significantly more challenging Class A Central division that coincided with the Purple Roses graduating a talented 2018 senior class that they are still trying to replace.

Although last season was not particularly fruitful by the won-loss record, St. Rose took some important steps and became a much more competitive team in a challenging Class A Central field. The Purple Roses picked up a tone-setting win over Manasquan outside the division, topped a surging Shore Regional team, swept Ocean and – perhaps most notably, consider their new division – beat Point Beach before losing a competitive game to perennial power Bishop Eustace in the opening round of the state tournament.

The Purple Roses will try to build off that strong finish and replicate the win over Point Beach two more times this season as they try to reclaim a Class B Central championship that was a near-annual accomplishment when St. Rose resided in the division prior to 2019. The renewed rivalry between the Roses and the Garnet Gulls will have several players back from last year and like Point Beach, St. Rose will have a dependable pitching staff. The three Jacks – Jack Tiernan, Jack Lomerson and Jack Donohue – return to a rotation that lost left-hander Ryan Rogers, but gains Point Boro junior transfer Anthony Crudo to provide help for the three returnees.

Lomerson and Tiernan are the top two returning players in the St. Rose lineup as well, with Tiernan playing shortstop and Lomerson back at third base when the two are not pitching. Senior catcher Dave Bookbinder is another proven hitter back in the lineup and all three figure to put up big numbers this season now that they have traded in two games per year against Red Bank Catholic, Rumson-Fair Haven, Monmouth and Ocean for the Shore’s Group I programs.

Senior Joe Sestito, junior Brennan Sherman, senior Ryan Murray, sophomore Max Glassberg and junior James Doster all go from starting or playing for part of the year to projected starters, while freshman Frank Soos is set to make an immediate impact as a high school rookie. The mix of young players and varsity veterans is battle-hardened after a competitive season in Class A Central and is ready to take a shot at another division championship in B Central – a challenge the Purple Roses hope will preclude an even better showing come tournament time.

Long Branch

St. Rose had it tough moving to Class A Central right after it took a huge graduation hit, but no team in the Shore Conference got thrown to the wolves with their division alignment more than Long Branch did. The Green Wave enter the season once again as a Group IV school – a classification that landed it in the Class A North division in the first place. Over the past several years, Long Branch showed that size isn’t everything, going 0-42 in Class A North divisional play in three years as a division member with an overall record of 5-61.

Last year was a particularly demoralizing one for Long Branch, which went 0-20, endured multiple injuries to its opening-day starting group and lost the two games it played against B Central teams. Getting away from the teams in A North that overpower Long Branch will give the Green Wave a better chance to compete and improve throughout the season. The starting lineup is made up of players who were thrown to the lions last season and this year, will be playing against teams more their speed.

Junior Clinton Campbell did an admirable job as a sophomore in Class A North, hitting .241 with a double while getting experience at multiple positions, including catcher. Seniors Matt Lorme and Will Reyes return as middle infielders, with Lorme back at second base and Reyes taking over shortstop for graduated standout Adam Benetsky – Long Branch’s lone all-division selection from a year ago. Sophomore Carlos Torres will join Lorme and Reyes as returning starters in the infield and sophomore Noah Hoogmoed will play first base full time after getting a look at the end of last season.

Seniors John Hebron and Andre Jackson are back as starting outfielders, with junior Romeo Martinez looking to solidify the right field job. Hebron and Jackson will both be key pieces in the pitching staff, as will Reyes, Torres and Campbell from the Long Branch starting infield.

There were some unsightly statistics that were a biproduct of Long Branch’s schedule and should look much more palatable this season as the Green Wave go from facing some of the state’s best Group IV programs and CBA to playing mostly Group I competition. It is not an automatic turnaround – Long Branch saw most team’s pitching depth and those pitchers are probably close to what the Green Wave will see again this season. It will take real improvement and quality play for Long Branch to actually turn its record around and contend with Point Beach and St. Rose, but the prospect of hard work and good execution actually paying off in results is something the Green Wave haven’t had a chance to enjoy. That change alone should make this a much more exciting year for Long Branch Baseball.

Henry Hudson

Playing with a sophomore-heavy team in 2022, Henry Hudson came within one more win on its schedule of going .500 and even without that checkpoint on its rebuild, Hudson has positioned itself for another step forward in 2023.

That step will have to come without all-division standout and 2022 ace Brandon Hendrickson, who transferred to Red Bank Catholic for this season. Hendrickson, however, was just part of that talented sophomore group, most of which is back and ready to lead the Admirals into battle against a division with a much different look this season.

Hayden Kurdes, Aiden Winters and Chris Parmigiani are the three standouts from the Henry Hudson junior class. Kurdes is the team’s best catching option, but he is also a capable centerfielder, as well as a pitcher who mostly worked in short stints in 2022, whether as a starter or in relief. Winters can also play multiple positions and will be the team’s primary shortstop, while also pitching near the top of the rotation.

Parmigiani leads the pitching staff after striking out 40 in 25 innings last year and if he can pound the strike zone with more frequency this season, the junior left-hander could be a tough matchup for any team in the division.

Seniors Nick Bigotto, Jesse Jacobs and Eddie Payne are each playing their first year of high school varsity baseball and all have the athleticism and base of skills to make an instant impact. Junior Nick Dowd, meanwhile, transferred from Keyport and brings experience on the infield, in the batter’s box and on the mound for Henry Hudson.

A group of underclassmen could have a significant say in the Admirals’ season as well, led by sophomore second baseman Teddy Fariello, sophomore outfielders Sean O’Connor and Alex Trenet and freshmen infielders Nathan Boms and David Ortote. That group will try to collectively try to make up for what Henry Hudson lost with the transfer of Hendrickson and with a lot of junior leadership, some new senior influence and a more balanced division, Henry Hudson is still on track for .500 or better season.

Keansburg

Despite graduating its best player, another dependable hitter and losing a top returner to injury, Keansburg brings enough back with enough to build upon that 2023 could be a solid year for the Titans. Keansburg was one of the two Class B Central teams to beat Long Branch last season, the other being now-defunct Mater Dei Prep. With Long Branch coming into the division hoping to ride its experience playing Class A North teams into contention, Keansburg already has an edge going into 2023.

The Titans bring back an accomplished, seasoned outfield, despite the fact that only one of the three players is a senior. Sophomore James Valle hopes to develop like his older brother, Andrew did while he became an all-division centerfielder who was Keansburg’s best player a year ago. On either side of him will be senior leftfielder Antonio Alejandro and junior rightfielder Phil Sears, who was one of Keansburg’s top hitters, as well as one of its top innings-eaters on the mound.

The infield also brings back senior experience, with shortstop Donald Antonucci, second baseman Aiden Flynn and first baseman Kyle Scott all back with varsity experience. Antonucci will be senior leader on the team and the No. 1 option on the mound as well. Freshman Mike Burke rounds out the starting infield, while junior John Gilliland steps in at catcher for injured senior Ryan Comey.

Antonucci and Sears will be tasked with leading the pitching staff, with Valle and Alejandro also figuring prominently into the picture on Keansburg’s staff. That group of four has the makings of a rotation that might be better than any in the division outside of Point Beach and St. Rose, which – if it played out that way – would put the Titans in line to lean on that pitching all the way to a top-four finish.

Keyport

Keyport missed out on a full, healthy season from two-way standout Anthony Longo, which limited the Red Raiders from having the kind of season they hoped for while sporting several exceptional athletes on the roster. With a lot of that talent now moved on in graduation, Keyport will try to create its next wave and climb its way back to the top half of the Class B Central division.

Senior Mason Hospital and junior Carter Williams lead a small group of returning starters, while sophomore Liam Killian and Derek Ferm hope to move on from the growing pains of being a varsity freshman and step up as dependable sophomores. Hospital is back at first base, Williams will again play second, while Killian and Ferm play key roles as catcher and shortstop, respectively. Senior Ben Morgan, who spent last season at Mater Dei Prep in the final season for the Seraphs before the school closed, will take over at third base.

The outfield will feature three new starters, with sophomore Roman Blanks sliding into the starting centerfield job after part-time duty as a freshman. Juniors Erik Schmidt and Andrew Staeger will play the corners and a trio of freshmen – Ryan Byrne, Tristan Knoblauch and Jacob Pinto – can fill in at different spots around the diamond, as well as DH.

Schmidt, Morgan and Williams will be Keyport’s top pitching options, with Williams returning after absorbing many of the Red Raiders’ big innings during the year. Contributions from Staeger and Blanks could also provide a lift on the pitching side, which is where Keyport will need some marked improvement to get back into the mix for a top-three spot in the division – a realistic goal, even for a team with inexperience in some key spots.

Asbury Park

Last season was a return to baseball for Asbury Park, which did not field a program in 2021 while trying to recover from the fallout of the canceled 2020 season. The Blue Bishops had an all-division-worthy player in Exiever Chathaunt who got a chance to play one more season after missing out on his sophomore and junior seasons following a solid showing as a freshman.

This year, the roster will be exceedingly young, with all of the returning players heading into their sophomore seasons and all the newcomers set to compete at the varsity level as freshmen. It will be an all-hands-on-deck effort to raise Asbury Park back to a competitive level, particularly on the mound, where everyone on the roster figures to contribute.
