There's only one thing worse than stepping outside on a frigid Jersey Shore morning. Getting inside a bone-chilling car. Most of us make the mad dash outside to warm our vehicles up or have remote starters (lucky). If you're doing this, you're actually breaking the law!

New Jersey code 7:27-14,15 states that all vehicles may idle for up to three minutes with the following exceptions:

  • May idle for up to 15 consecutive minutes when the vehicle has been stopped for 3 or more hours and ONLY if temperature is 25 degrees F
  • Buses may idle while actively discharging or picking up passengers for 15 consecutive minutes in a 60 minute period
  • No idling is allowed in a parking space with available and functioning electrification technology

This is the case in most states. Some are more strict than others.

If you think fines aren't being handed out, you're wrong. A man in Michigan got nailed with a $128 summons for warming up his car in his own driveway. That's just one of many examples of this "law."

While authorities cite environmental concerns and theft as the reason for this code, I think it's B.S. We're not going to save the planet by not idling in the winter. And if your car gets jacked while it's warming up, that sucks, but thems the breaks.

Do you think this is a ridiculous law? Tell us in the comment section below.
