A friend of mine -- who shall remain nameless -- has told me that gender inequality doesn't really exist anymore.

Before you roll your eyes at the topic....just wait for the story that I have for you.

Listen to Nicole Murray middays on 94.3 The Point and download our free 94.3 The Point app.

Listen, in a way the 1940's were a long time ago and a lot of things have changed since the time when women were solely expected to stay home, cook, clean and care for their husbands. (Over my dead body)

But to say that the misogynistic attitude from this time period hasn't carried over into 2021 is an extremely ignorant thing to say. It has.

Here is a very extreme example that I actually witnessed.

So this is not news at this point but I got back surgery recently and a big part of the recovery is going to physical therapy.

At the physical therapist's office, it is just one open room with various beds for patients and therapists who are jumping around attending to everyone. It is a very well-operated system.

So I was laying face-down while receiving heat at the start of my appointment when another male patient walked into the room.

This conversation occurred between this male patient (we'll call him Mike) and one of the other physical therapists.

Therapist: "Hey Mike! I see you are listed to have another evaluation today. Didn't you just have one?"

Mike: "I did. That is what --let's use the name Jane -- Jane suggested last time."

Therapist: "Huh, strange. Well let's get started then."

Mike: "Well that's what happens when you let a woman make a decision in a world run by men."

My eyes shot open and my head popped up. I locked eyes with this man and the room went silent.

I was so angry I was shaking and ultimately decided to remain quiet, which to this day I regret.

It was earlier on during my recovery when the pain was much more severe and I thought to myself: "Why am I going to get all worked up over this one ignorant man when my energy is clearly much more needed elsewhere?"

At the time it made sense. But every time I think back to this moment, I regret not speaking up.

I may not have been able to change this guy's way of thinking, but maybe having someone speak up against "Mike" might encourage him to keep his hateful thoughts to himself in the future.

We've come a long way. But we also still have a long way to go.

These issues still exist even though they are not being accepted in the workplace or from influencers. BUT....they still happen on a regular basis under the radar. I promise you.

This subject can be a touchy one and if you have experienced something like this-- or anything triggering for that matter -- I am so sorry.

It may help to tell me about it just to get it off your chest to SOMEONE. So email me at Nicole.Murray@Townsquaremedia.com.

If you aren't comfortable with reaching out to me, I get it.

Then here is a link to some Mental Health Resources in New Jersey.

I just hope you tell someone in your life so it doesn't just sit inside of you.

Like I said, we've come a long way but we still have a long way to go until all can live a life where they are truly comfortable in their own skin.

Stay kind everyone.
