Well, you know the old saying “you learn something new every day”? This is one of those cases. We know we don’t like to pump our own gas here in the Garden State, we pump our fists, right? Well after doing some investigating maybe the reason we don’t like to pump our own gas is because you could end up behind bars!

Did you know it is illegal to pump your own gas in New Jersey? It’s an actual law and if you grab that nozzle you are a criminal! The law dates back to 1949. It was an effort to avoid accidents by people who were not experienced with pumping fuel. I guess most of America doesn’t care if inexperienced gas pumpers go ahead and fill their tank. Only one other state besides New Jersey has gas station attendants, and that's Oregon. FYI if you're traveling to New York or Massachusetts, according to Wikipedia, the town of Weymouth, Massachusetts, and the town of Huntington, New York, retail customers are prohibited by law from pumping their own gasoline.

I think we have all broken the law at one time or another. You are in a hurry, there are lots of cars filling up and you jump out when your car is done filling up and you remove the hose and put your cap back on to save time. JAILBIRD! I doubt anyone is going to turn themselves in though.
