Waking up in New Jersey on a Monday is never easy, and after reading this, it might be that much harder. Guess which state has the highest total tax bill per person?

As the saying goes, I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count. Congratulations, Garden State, you've made it to the top of another list you don't want to be on.

Yes, New Jersey's tax bill per person is higher than any other state (and Washington, DC) in the entire country. Our bill is a whopping $26,657.29. And $7600 of that is just property taxes. Ouch.

The bad news doesn't end there, Our property taxes are the highest in the nation (of course), but our home value is only the eighth highest, according to research done by Go Banking Rates. Ouch again.

If you combine our state income tax paid with our sales tax paid, that adds up to about another $6000. Is there a synonym for ouch?

Not that any of this really surprises any of us in the Garden State, but it's just another reminder of why what little money that resides in our pocket quickly finds a home in someone else's. Welcome to the Garden State.
