A popular manufacturer of grated cheese has announced a nationwide, voluntary recall of several products due to possible salmonella contamination.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 4C Foods Corp. is voluntarily recalling 4C Grated Cheese, Homestyle Grated Cheese and Cento Grated Cheese. The recall includes 6 oz. vacuum-sealed glass jars, with "best by" dates between Nov. 12, 2016 and Nov. 12, 2018.

According to the company, the recalled products include grated "All Natural" parmesan, romano and parmesan/romano cheese blend as well as their "Homestyle" parmesan and romano cheese and Cento brand parmesan and romano. Retailers are being asked to remove the products from their store shelves as well as warehouses and anyone who has purchased one of the products can return it for a full refund, 4C Corp. said in a statement Wednesday.

According to the FDA, salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children as well as those with compromised immune systems including the frail or elderly. Healthy individuals who become infected with salmonella can suffer from fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the salmonella organism can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses.

The salmonella was detected in the products after testing was conducted by the FDA. So far, no illnesses have been reported, but the company said it's recalling the cheese products "out of an abundance of caution."
