A Toms River woman is charged with neglect and animal cruelty for leaving her infant grandchild and three dogs in the car with the windows up and engine off with temperatures in the mid-80’s on Thursday around 12:45 pm.

Doreen Orlich, 52, was inside of a Berkeley home on Speightstown Place in the Holiday City section of the township while the child and dogs were in the car as she attend to a friend’s pets.

A Parcel delivery driver heading by the area noticed the crying child and called 9-1-1.

Berkeley Patrolman Michael Drybola brought the baby drenched in sweat into his patrol car to help her cool off and removed the dogs from the vehicle as well.

Other officers arrived but could not immediately locate anyone who might have been caring for the child .

After a few moments Orlich emerged from the residence just as first aid units arrived.

The care giver, identified as Doreen Orlich, 52, of Whitesville Road in Toms River, identified herself as the child’s grandmother.

The infant was transported to Community Medical Center as a precaution along with Orlich.

Once at CMC the Division of Child Protection and Permanency was called and immediately responded to CMC.

Berkeley Detective Michael O’Connor also responded to continue the investigation.

Orlich was charged with one count of cruelty or neglect of a child in the 4th degree, along with three counts animal cruelty in the 4th degree.

She was released in accordance with NJ Bail Reform.
