VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Lt. Kim Guadagno's mother will be laid to rest on Thursday in a private service.

Guadagno last week put her campaigning for the Republican nomination for governor on hold. The gubernatorial primary is Tuesday.

A viewing is scheduled for Mary Patricia "Patty" Blevins McFadden Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m at the H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with a private funeral on Thursday, according to her obituary, which said she passed away on Monday.

McFadden, whose husband died in 2012, had six children, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. "She loved every one of them in her own way and we have no doubt she and Chuck will continue to marvel at what their love story of 55 years has produced," her obituary says.

The family asked for donations to any pediatric AIDS program.

Granddaughter Laura Mendes posted on her Facebook page that McFadden was "the definition of a strong woman, the woman behind the man. Thank you for teaching me things that I didn't realize were important until I became a wife and mother myself."

Guadagno, who also serves as the head of the State Department, missed speaking on Monday at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial service at PNC Bank Arts Center in order to be with her family in Virginia.
