Manchester Police said they responded to the call around 12:32 pm on Tuesday afternoon to investigate the motor vehicle accident where the 2013 red Kia Soul overturned near Mile Marker 43 and ended up inching into the the woods.

As they investigated the crash, police learned that Russell Van Pelt, 79, was driving west on Route 70 when the vehicle began to drift to the eastbound lane, crossing the centerline in the process and then onto the dirt shoulder continuing into a utility pole and then rolling over onto its side.

Russell Van Pelt suffered multiple injuries and was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by medevac helicopter, police said, where he is listed in stable condition.

His front seat passenger, 74-year-old Judith Van Pelt, also suffered multiple injuries and was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by medevac helicopter, police said, where she is listed in stable condition.

Manchester Police are continuing to investigate the crash, "but at this point, failure to maintain lane is the contributing cause of the motor vehicle accident."

This crash is being investigated by Lieutenant Antonio Ellis, Patrolman Conner Yatauro and Patrolman Jesse Hoydis of the Manchester Township Police Department Traffic Safety section.
