For most schools in our area spring break is over and it’s back to business today although there are some districts that have this week off.

I spent most of Easter weekend in Washington D.C. which was quite a bit different and quite enjoyable.

It was only the third time in the last 30 years or so I have visited our nation’s capital and I admit to forgetting about how amazing the city truly is. You get an overwhelming feeling of patriotism when you get up close to the monuments and think about the time and effort it took to build them in some cases more than 200 years ago.

There are also newer landmarks like the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial which are jaw-dropping in the history and sacrifice they represent.  We took a nighttime bus tour of the monuments and it included a stop at the Marine Corps War Memorial which I had never seen before and is a large statue of the iconic photo of six Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima.

That memorial had special significance because my father served in the Second Marine Division during both World War II and Korea and being in the corps was something he was very proud of for his entire life.

If you have not been to Washington D.C. if many years then it’s well worth the 3 ½ hour drive and I hope to get back again before too long.

A couple of unrelated quick hitters:

The Chicago White Sox opened up a three-game series against the Yankees in the Bronx last night and did so without third baseman Todd Frazier who has been battling the flu and missed four of the last five games.

Frazier is actually home in Toms River which is what he normally does when the White Sox are playing in New York and he hopes to get back in the lineup before the series ends tomorrow night.  Todd is off to a slow start and has just 3 hits, including one home run, in 27 at-bats.

Frazier’s alma mater is certainly not off to a slow start as Toms River South improved to 5-0 with an 11-2 rout of rival Toms River North Monday.  T.J. Scuderi led a 17-hit attack by going 5-5 with two RBI’s and three runs scored while Justin Fall improved to 3-0 on the mound.  In his 40th season Indians head coach Ken Frank shows no signs of slowing down with career win #852 adding to his state record total.
