A deer crossing the road and running in front of a vehicle in the Whiting section of Manchester has sent a man to the hospital where he remains critical but stable.

Manchester Police said they responded around 7:38 pm on Saturday night to the area of Beckerville Road and Central Avenue to investigate a motor vehicle accident.

Officers responding to the call found a white 2020 Subaru WRX with extensive damage, after it struck a tree, and the driver still inside the vehicle fastened by a seatbelt.

An investigation revealed that the driver, 19-year old Isaiah Shabazz of Whiting, was heading east on Beckerville Road when a deer darted out into the middle of the road from a wooded area and right into his lane of travel.

As a result, the deer ran collided with the car driven by Shabazz who then lost control of the vehicle, entering the westbound lane and heading off road and then colliding into a mailbox, landscape rocks and a large tree.

Police said that Shabazz was extricated by fire department personnel and transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by Robert Wood Johnson Life Flight medevac helicopter for treatment of possible head trauma and internal injuries.

He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

This crash is being investigated by Sergeant Ian Bole of the department’s Traffic Safety section.
