Dave Portnoy Reviews the Legendary Maruca’s Tomato Pies in Seaside Heights, NJ
Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy recently made a Jersey Shore tour reviews pizza for his super popular One Bite Facebook video series. Dave scored the world-famous Maruca's Tomato Pies in Seaside Heights.
After making two stops in Red Bank, Dave took the Parkway south to Exit 82 and hit the boardwalk for a taste of Maruca's.
Maruca's is one of my favorite pizzas at the Shore. The swirl of sauce and cheese is hypnotizing. Maybe that's why I can devour an entire pie in one sitting. I digress.
Dave, dressed in his touristy Seaside Heights t-shirt said he had never been to Seaside Heights before, or as he called it "Snookiville." He added that he'd likely never come back. I don't know why. He really didn't get into it.
He explained in the review that he has a different method of scoring when it comes to "boardwalk pizza." I'm assuming that he lowers his expectations. And while Maruca's is technically boardwalk pizza, it's not like a greasy slice that a hold-in-the-wall nukes in the microwave. It's better than that.
Dave opens the box and takes his first bite. He was pleasantly surprised and impressed. He said, "this was better than I thought it was going to be." After taking a few more bites of the massive slice, he gave Maruca's Tomato Pie a 7.5. Now, if you're not a regular viewer of Dave's reviews, for "boardwalk pizza," that's a decent score. I was hoping for a 7.8 or 7.9, personally. Only the best of the best make it into the 8 range.
Hopefully, Dave Portnoy will give Seaside Heights a real chance and spend some quality time there. It is, after all, the All-American boardwalk.
