UNION CITY — The father of a toddler who was killed in a devastating fire March 4 has been charged with causing the blaze.

Eddie Gonzalez Sr., 26, and Edwin Diaz, 20, are both facing charges in connection to the fire, although neither have been charged with arson or with the child's death.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez suggested Thursday that more charges could be filed.

“The investigation into the Eddie’s death is far from over,” Suarez said. “Our continuing investigation will now focus on trying to ascertain the events which led to his death.”

Authorities did not explain how exactly they believe the fire was started.

Eddie Gonzalez Jr. was the only fatal victim of the early Saturday morning fire that ripped through eight buildings and destroyed the steeple of Sts. Joseph and Michael Church.

The baby lived with his father, mother and a 5-month-old sibling at 1404 Summit Ave., which was engulfed in flames by the time police and North Hudson Fire and Rescue arrived on scene.

Police were unable to get into the building to rescue the boy.

High winds spread the fire to other buildings. At least 85 people were displaced.

Both defendants have been summoned to appear April 6 at Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City.
