BRICK — After a man told police he was beaten with a large stick before being robbed a large law enforcement contingent helped track the man into the woods.

According to Brick police the incident happened late Friday night at the Wine World on Route 88. After hitting the victim with the stick and hiding the night deposit in his pants police say the man, identified as 20-year-old Michael Martinez fled the scene.

Martinez, from the Princeton Junction section of West Windsor ran away from another employee of the store, according to police. After he got away from the store local police were assisted in searching for him by members of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department "who were nearby on an unrelated matter," Brick police reported.

Sheriff's K-9 officer Ted Wielichoski and his partner Jax tracked Martinez to a wooded area and, according to police, trying to hide in heavy brush. He was taken into custody by Brick Officer Dominick Puccio as well as Wielichoski . Police say they also found the weapon they believe was used in the robbery, as well as the stolen cash.

After being taken to headquarters Martinez was charged with robbery, theft, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. He was then taken to the Ocean County Jail.

The robbery victim was treated at the scene for a head injury and refused further attention, according to police.
