The grand jury that indicted Stephen J. Paul, 43, on Tuesday, also listed a third-degree count of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and a fourth-degree unlawful weapon possession charge, according to the office of Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina.

Paul has been held at the Burlington County Jail since his August 1 arrest, the same day as the stabbing took place. His arraignment is scheduled for November 13.

Investigators have not speculated on a motive. A relative, turned away by Paul at the entrance to his apartment and suspecting that the victim, Edward Williams, 70, was  within, summoned police to the dwelling at 2:30 PM, authorities said.

Paul admitted Burlington City police officers, who found Williams with lacerations splayed across his upper body, authorities said. He was pronounced dead in the apartment. Police recovered the knife believed to have been used and took Paul in without incident.

Assistant Prosecutor Bob VanGilst is conducting the prosecution’s case.

Burlington City police and the Prosecutor’s Office were assisted in the investigation by the Westampton Township Police Department.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
