It quickly became a #1 hit on Billboard, Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded "That'll Be the Day" this day in 1957. Holly had recorded and released a version earlier on Decca, but this newer version on the Brunswick label proved to be the right one, and the rest is history. The song's title was inspired by a line from a John Wayne film called The Searchers. See a live performance of the song by Buddy & the guys by clicking on the photo. Sadly, the song's title proved to be very prophetic in Buddy's short life.
