Berkeley Township Councilwoman Judy Noonan will host a special program on Cablevision Channel 21 this month - a presentation about veterans, for veterans. At a recent taping at Holiday City Carefree, she pointed out that military members past and present make up an important part of our community.

"We have 68,000 vets in Ocean County, and a good majority of them are living in senior communities," Noonan said. "But what this is really to help... is about our homeless vets."

Noonan says problems with the Veterans' Administration (VA) have only made that problem worse. Bob Smyth is the Veterans' Liaison for Congressman Tom MacArthur (R-3), and he says helping returning vets transition into civilian life is a top priority.

"We're looking at jobs for veterans, so veterans that are currently already out of the service will have resources for jobs," Smyth said. "(Congressman MacArthur) is co-sponsoring legislation for jobs, we're looking at military transitioning when people exit the military and go into the public workplace."

Smyth agrees that improving the VA is also vital, and he says the outpatient facility in Brick will soon be expanding. He also says a new facility being planned in Marlton will help alleviate access problems being faced by patients attempting to use the VA center at Fort Dix.
