ASBURY PARK — A 37-year-old city man has been convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl in 2014.

A Monmouth County jury handed up the guilty verdict Wednesday against Didier Villagra on charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and second-degree child endangerment.

Prosecutors did not publicly disclose Villagra's relationship to his victim, but as in many cases of child sexual abuse, the predator was known to and trusted by the child.

Prosecutors say Villagra, who lived in the same home as the girl, entered her bedroom one evening in April 2014 and raped her.

The next morning, the girl told her mother what had happened.

Villagra faces 20 years in prison for the first-degree rape charge when he is sentenced Aug. 18 by Superior Court Judge David F. Bauman sitting in Freehold Borough. He also will be required to register as a sex offender and be on parole supervision for life.
