We reported to you earlier this week about a local Ocean County New Jersey man who was going to set out for war-torn Ukraine to help his family safely reach Poland to escape the horrors of what is happening on their country.

We introduced you to Ed Cisternas, who left Toms River, recently to go to Europe to help his family flee the war in Ukraine. Obviously this was no simple task. It wasn’t like Ed was smply going to the airport to pick up the family. Mr Cisternas had to go to Europe and then drive into Ukraine get the family and head to the border into Poland.

Ed left for Poland where he met up with journslists who were traveling to Kiev, they offered to lead Ed through back roads of Ukraine to avoid Russian Army troops. Along the way Ed saw fighting and soldiers on both sides, members of the Ukraine Army and Russian Army as well. In his travels Ed saw refugees who were driving and/or walking from war and trying to head to NATO countries like Slovenia and Poland. Ed saw life and death during this recue mission. He will not call what he did heroic, but I will. This was an amazing undertaking and we are glad he and his family are safe and out of Ukraine.
