I don’t know how good a location New Jersey was for the recently-played Super Bowl but it might serve as a more ideal location for the Winter Olympics then Sochi.

While we remain in the grips of real winter weather the Russian city is experiencing spring-like conditions that are causing problems and there is no end in sight.  Temperatures have been in the 50’s during most days and they could be in the 60’s by the end of the week.  Alpine skiing and snowboarding are the most effected venues and while there’s plenty of man-made snow the warm temperatures are resulting in some slushy conditions.

My son Brandon is in Sochi for his job and said most days he doesn’t even need a coat.

By the way the 9-hour time difference means that those of you watching the Olympics in prime time on TV are clearly viewing events that have already taken place.  Despite that the early ratings are strong which is not unexpected.  I have been able to watch plenty of live Olympic action on some of NBC’s other channels during the day and have noticed that attendance at many of the events has been extremely poor.

As a matter of fact International Olympic Committee officials have instructed the Russians to give free tickets to school children and those in the military not on duty to fill some of the empty seats which is frankly pretty embarrassing.

Congratulations to the Manchester Township High School girls bowling team for their winning effort against Brick Memorial in the finals of the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions Monday in North Brunswick.   The Hawks claimed the Group 2 title and then beat Group 3 champion Brick in the semifinals before outlasting the Mustangs and avenging last year’s loss in the TOC Final.

Manchester’s winning effort was led by Julia Ott and Stephanie Tremper and it’s the third overall state championship for Hawk coach Mike McCrae in the last six years.

Monmouth University announced Monday they will retire the #80 worn by current Cowboys star receiver Miles Austin at halftime of the Hawks basketball game against St. Peter’s on Saturday, February 22.  Austin holds several Monmouth receiving records and has earned two Pro Bowl selections with Dallas since leaving West Long Branch.  He will be the first player to have his number retired in the 21-year history of the football program.
