After a terrible start the Toms River East football team has turned things around and will take a two-game winning streak into tonight’s visit to Toms River South in the first all-Toms River matchup of the fall.

Even if the Raiders fall short on the scoreboard they have already emerged as winners this week and clearly know the meaning of “paying it forward.” Thursday assistant coach Pete Gudzak presented a $1700 donation to Ocean of Love as part of the billboard radiothon that our sister station 105.7 The Hawk has been doing this week.

The team raised the money through a Madden Tournament they hosted and it’s the second straight year they have used the proceeds to make a donation at the billboard.   Ironically the East-South game will be broadcast tonight on 105.7 just after Andy Chase leaves the billboard he has basically lived on since Monday.

The Raiders are led by Matt Gudzak, (Pete’s younger brother) who has run for nearly 400 yards and scored 8 touchdowns in the last two games.  The explosive Indians have plenty of firepower on their own thanks to players like Tymere Berry and Otis Kearney and the return of Russell Messler from a knee injury has given the team a big lift.

How many of you are aware that the World Series is going on?  What used to be America’s marquee sporting event has clearly taken a back seat to pro football and the best proof of that was Monday night’s dreadful football game between the Giants and Vikings resulted in better TV ratings then World Series game #1 on Wednesday.  By the way the Red Sox and Cardinals are tied at a game apiece. those are the teams playing in the Fall Classic.

Customers of Always Something Special Florist in Bayville might be in for quite a surprise the next time they visit the store on Route 9.  Owners Amy & Anthony Cinkutis were the winners of the FTD Makeover Magic Contest and this week received a complete renovation of the retail portion of the store including interior design, lighting and signage.

Always Something Special was selected from nearly 100 entries for being able to tell why their store should be chosen for the makeover.    FTD flew designer Keith White in from Texas several weeks ago to get a close-up look and go over the needs and plans with the Amy & Anthony, who did some work on their own.   White then returned this week to lead the project which was completed Wednesday.
